4.8 - Summary: When to use what

This article summarizes when to choose different data input and simulation methods from the Insert Column options in the Planning ribbon. Use this guide to choose the appropriate column types for planning data, approval workflows, and scenario modeling.

Choose data input methods

  1. Use Formula to create visual-level calculations that reference existing measures and functions when building plan and projection calculations.

  2. Use Number to insert an empty series for zero-based budgeting or copy an existing series for incremental budgeting.

  3. Use Text, Checkbox, Person, List, and Date columns to store approval details such as status, approver name, and approval date.

Configure simulation methods

  1. Use Simulate to adjust inputs and review projection variances. Refer to the what-if simulations guide for more information. See Adding a Simulation Measure.
