10.3 - Configure writeback settings

In this tutorial, you'll learn how to configure writeback settings in a planning sheet. You'll configure writeback types, apply filters, manage column mapping, configure advanced settings, and write data and scenarios back to a destination.

Access writeback settings

All writeback-related settings are available under the Writeback ribbon. You can configure different writeback options for data input columns such as formulas, numbers, notes, approval status, comments, and native columns.

1. Open the planning sheet.

2. Go to the Writeback ribbon.

   

Configure writeback types

You can configure the structure of the writeback table using the WB Type dropdown.

1. Select the WB Type dropdown.

   

2. Select the required writeback type:

   • Long – Stores one row per observation and one column for each variable.

     

   • Wide – Stores each measure in a separate column.

     

   • Long with Changes – Records changes or adjustments while storing data in the long format.

     

   • Wide with Changes – Records changes or adjustments while storing data in the wide format.

     

3. When you change the writeback type, the configured writeback destination is disabled. In the warning message, select Proceed.

   

4. Under Manage, turn on the toggle to enable the destination again.

   

Configure filtered data writeback

You can apply filters to limit the data written to the destination.

1. Select the Filter dropdown.

   

2. Select the required filter option:

   • None – Writes all data without filters.

     

   • Data with comments only – Writes only rows, columns, or cells containing comments.

     

   • Calculated rows only – Writes only calculated rows to the destination.

     

Configure writeback column mapping

You can rename writeback columns for measures and dimensions.

1. Select Mapping.

   

2. Rename the required writeback column names for measures and dimensions.

   

Configure advanced writeback settings

Use Settings to configure advanced writeback options.

1. Select Settings.

   

2. Under the General tab, configure the following settings:

   • Writeback type

   • Filter type

   • Decimal precision

   • Maximum text length

3. Under Date Key Configuration, select Add Date Key to write different versions to the destination.

   

4. Select the Data tab to choose the series to write back.

5. Use the toggle to include or exclude HTML formatting for text inputs.

   

6. Select Destinations to add, edit, or delete destinations.

   

7. Select Advanced to configure data validation and rename writeback columns.

   
8. Configure data validation by either:

   • Setting validation for non-empty fields.

   • Entering a custom formula.

   

Writeback data

After configuring writeback settings, you can write data to the selected destination.

1. Select Writeback.

   

2. View the writeback milestones displayed in the upper-right corner.

   

Writeback scenarios

After creating scenarios, you can write them back to the database.

1. Select the Writeback > Writeback All.

   

2. Select or clear the checkbox to include or exclude specific scenarios.

   

3. Select Writeback to write scenarios back to the database.
